Guitar Positioning and Tuning

After choosing the right guitar for you, it would be now the time for you to know how to place your guitar and the way to tune it well.

First of all, you should know about how to place your guitar. To start with, you should try to find a chair without arms so that you can have spaces to move your arms freely. You have to sit straight or otherwise, you would not have bad habits and later on, after playing guitar for a long time, you would find that your back would be very painful.

If you could hold your guitar well, the sixth string would come near to your chest while the first one should be near to the feet. To begin with, you should try to put the guitar in front of your chest and it should land on your lap. If you want to use your right hand to play, you have to put it on the right leg of your own. In fact, many acoustic guitars would include a curved indentation which would help you place it on the leg more easily.

If you want to use right hand to play, you are supposed to put your fret hand leftward and vice versa. The fret hand is supposed to hold the neck in a gentle way, with the thumb placed behind it. What about the other fingers? They should actually be everywhere on the strings. You should always remember that you should try curling your fingers, unless your teachers tell you not to do so.

After positioning, let us talk about picking. Picking refers to the picks that are required for playing guitar. They are made up of different kinds of materials such as plastic and wood. Therefore, it is actually not expensive to buy. When you start playing guitar, you need to buy at least 10 picks so that you would be able to strum the stings. These picks are flat and triangular but some are of different shapes, depending on the manufacturers. By the way, when you choose the picks, you should remember to choose ones which are controllable. Otherwise, it would be difficult for you to play well at the beginning.

When you finish putting on your picks and got your proper gesture, you could start strumming your guitar. The hand with picks should be closest to the bridge of the guitar. Also, you need to ensure that the thumb of your hands should always be near to the index finger and the picks are supposed to be behind the thumb.

If you use acoustic guitars, you could try to strum with your hand over the hole which the sound comes from and if you use an electric one, you need to position your hand above the strings. Besides, you should ensure that you could hold your picks tight and the pointed part of it should be pointed from your fist.

Moreover, you should always keep in mind that the hand which you pick is supposed to be away from the strings or the body of the guitar. It means that, you should not use your arm, but your wrist, to strum. If the strings fluctuated too much, you should try to pick more gently and if you get used to your guitar, you could gradually increase the frequency of picking.

Of course, the most important thing you need to remember is that practice makes perfect, and you should never expect to play perfectly at the first time. When you first hold your picks, you might feel uncomfortable, but after more practices, you would get used to it. Therefore, you should try to do more practices, and you should try to repeat the techniques mentioned above in order to know more about how to handle your guitar.
